Hello,

Dare Obasanjo - who is the Microsoft tech lead for the .NET XML APIs
if I'm not mistaken - has written up a blog story titled "On
Compatibility Between XAML and Xamlon".

Dare writes:

I've been having difficulty processing this news over the past few
days. Reading the Xamlon homepage gives more cause for pause. The site
proclaims...

What I find interesting about this are the claims that involve
unreleased products that aren't expected to beta until next year and
ship the year afterwards. I can understand that it is cool to claim to
have scooped Microsoft but considering that the XAML and Longhorn are
still being worked on it seems strange to claim to have built a
product that is compatible with unreleased Microsoft products.

Considering that XAML isn't even in beta yet, one can expect a lot
more changes to the language before it ships in 2006. Yet Xamlon
claims to be compatible with XAML. I have no idea how the Xamlon team
plans to make good on their promise to be compatible with XAML and
Longhorn before they've even shipped but I'd love to see what
developers out there think about this topic.

What's your take? Is the Xamlon XAML compatibility claim just a
marketing ploy? Or is Microsoft starting to spread FUD about XAML to
fend off annoying startups trying to steal the XAML show?

I posted a response on his blog, here it is:

Dare,

As you pointed out in your last paragraph, when authors write about emerging
technologies, then that technology changes, they often release updates or
new editions of their books.

We plan on doing the same thing with our software. Xamlon 1.0 is fully
compatible with the current version of Longhorn, and for the public, that's
currently Longhorn Build 4074. As new versions of Avalon ship, we'll release
our 'next editions' to match the relevant changes.

Xamlon is about allowing developers to start developing today with very cool
technology that's coming out in the future. We're just giving them a head
start, and taking on the burden of keeping up with changes.

-Paul

Hello,

Chris Sells - who is Microsoft's Longhorn/Windows 2009 content
strategist - weighs in on the XAML compatibility debate/FUD campaign.

Chris writes:

Like Rob, I find this amusing. I grew up in a period of Microsoft's
life where they were much derided for "leveraging" ideas from the rest
of the world and repurposing them for use in Windows (or *as* Windows
in some cases). Now that Microsoft has caught up and passed most of
the rest of the world in many crucial areas of technology, it's nice
to see us grow into the role of thought leader instead of follower.

...

I guess you could call copying one part of a product from a preview
and shipping only that part "getting a jump," but I remain confident
in the complete Avalon story when it ships.

What's your take? Do you think Microsoft is a thought leader that is
breaking new ground with XAML? Or do you think that Microsoft's XAML
is just a massive land grab that repackages, for example, XUL, SVG,
XSL-FO, XForms, and so on into an all-in-one package?
