Hello,

The latest rumor coming out of Microsoft is that Avalon will get
dropped or end up just as an optional addon from Windows 2007 (aka
Longhorn).

Darryl K. Taft writes in the eweek story titled "Longhorn Changes
May Affect Microsoft's Tools Strategy":

The internal word is that "Avalon could end up like WinFS if it
misses its milestone. They're laying the groundwork for [Avalon] to be
shipped later, as a separate component."

Asked whether Avalon will be cut from Longhorn, Somasegar replied: "We
absolutely thought about that. There are three endpoints to the
triangle. You've got features, you've got quality, and you've got time
to market. There's a balance that you need to strike between those
three things."

What's your take? Can XAML survive without Avalon - the next-gen
graphics engine for Windows 2007/8/9?

Well, the Longhorn bloggers are backpedalling on that and are saying
that the quote is completely out of context. I would tend to agree
with them, except this is the second posting now about Avalon being
delayed.

Adam Kinney made a hypoethical question of it here:

Two things that I think, without any justification other than gut
feel. One, Longhorn is turning into a major debacle. Two, XAML is
dead.
