Hello,

Marc Clifton highlights a Microsoft Watch story titled "Microsoft
to Gut Longhorn to Make 2006 Delivery Date" that outlines Microsoft's
new strategy to decouple Avalon from Longhorn and ship it also for
older Windows versions.

What's your take? Do you want to see Avalon bundled with the .NET
runtime? Do you think anyone can compete with a free Avalon Windows
XP offering from Microsoft?

Hello, Gerald:

Though I'm not privy to any of the internal plans
of Microsoft, the decision to decouple Avalon from
Longhorn cannot (IMHO) bode well for any of the
for-profit start-up companies, because they will
be competing directly with MS, and therefore they
will no longer be 'filling a gap'.

Moreover, Microsoft's decision cannot be good news
for SVG, particulary when you take into account
the stability of plug-in support and the status
of sXBL (formerly RCC) for SVG 1.2. I'm guessing
that SVGT will become increasingly prominent and
may start overshadowing 'full' SVG.

I'd say that Microsoft has upped the ante, and
even though the release date is 2006, somehow it
feels like it's right around the corner....

Regards,

Oswald

No, which is why I never understood the Xamlon business model. Paul
Colton's spin on it is that it Avalon won't be available for a
couple more years. Read more:

From my biased perspective though, I think MyXaml can compete
because it offers more than just XAML--I provide components and
tools that are useful for application architecture. Of course,
by "compete", that means that .01% of developers will end up using
MyXaml. :)
